To give them their proper name they are Fibroepithelial Polyps.
Fibro- Meaning containing fibre
Epithelial- Denoting the thin tissue forming the outer layer of the skin
Polyp- Meaning a small growth, usually benign and with a stalk
There is no real reason as to why some people develop skin tags and others don't. Skin tags generally start to grow where there are skin folds, such as around the neck, axilla (armpit) and in the groin. Your are more at risk of developing these pesky little growths if you are, hmm, how shall I put it, slightly on the larger side. Most skin tags don't grow much beyond a few millimeters, however I have removed some in general practice which had noteabley grown very large over time and were now becoming a big issue for the patients.
Although benign they are often considered unsightly and become troublesome for some clients. For some years now the NHS has declined to remove them as they are solely considered cosmetic.
For small skin-tags I use a very fine cautery tool, this removes them at their base, with no need for a surgical procedure and less risk of scarring. This is generally done without local anaesthetic, as most clients find that the injection of local anaesthitic is more painful than the procedure.
If you have a low pain threshold, please let me know and I will apply numbing cream prior to any treatment.
As with all my treatments a thorough consultation will be carried out before offering any treatment.
