Botulinum toxin type A is a neurotoxin that is injected into targeted treatment areas using an ultra-fine needle. It works by blocking the nerve signals needed for facial muscles to contract. It’s this repeated contraction of the facial muscles that causes expression lines and wrinkles. Once injected, the toxin temporarily paralyses the muscles and decreases/stops their movement to reduce the appearance of lines or wrinkles in the area. You will see the results gradually over 3-7 days, with the peak affect after two weeks.
Toxin is primarily used to soften lines on the forehaed, glabellar (frown lines) and the lataeral canthal lines (crows feet). More advanced treatment areas include around the lips and chin. Use of toxin in these areas is generally considered "off-licence".
Botulinum toxin type A has been used in the medical field for over 150 years. It can treat muscle spasticity, hyperhidrosis, migraine and much more. In the field of cosmetics the first licence for treatment of glabellar lines was granted in 2002, after a Californian plastic surgeon used it to treat forhead asymetry. Since then many more licenses have been granted.
Toxin treatments are quick with minimal discomfort, requiring no anaesthesia and recovery time.
The results of toxin typically last between 3-5 months from the date of injection. Over time the body metabolizes the toxin, leading to the slow return of muscle movement in the treatment area. Regular treatments are advised to maintain a consistent line-free look.
There is no right or wrong time. Some clients get toxin injections in their 20s, when they first start to notice lines appear, as a preventative measure. The longer you leave it the deeper your static lines will become. This means treatment with toxin alone might not be enough.
Botulinum toxin type A is actually one of the most deadliest toxins known to man!! Why would we want to inject ourselves with it you ask? The doses used in wrinkle treatment are so so tiny that they are absolutely safe to use.
No it is not recommended to have toxin treatments when you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Reports showed toxicity in animal studies, and manufacturers advise to avoid having these treatments.
You can experience redness, bruising, swelling and itching at the injection site. This is quite common and wears off quickly.
